There are three different solutions for private use: Wallbox, charging pole or household socket. For indoor use, such as wall mounting in a garage, a wallbox is best suited. For outdoor use, on the other hand, such as for ground installation in car parks, a charging station is best. Both offer a safe and higher power output compared to a household socket, which can quickly overheat and takes a long time to charge.

In addition, a distinction is made between five plug types: Type 1, Type 2 (Mennekes), CCS, CHAdeMo, and the Tesla Supercharger. The Type 2 plug has established itself as the European standard over the last few years, but the CCS plug is also widely used. Depending on your vehicle type, you must select the appropriate plug.

On average, a wallbox charges an electric car about ten times faster and is significantly safer than a conventional socket (2.3 kW). Currently, there are wallboxes with an output of 3.7 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW. If your electric car can be charged with a 22 kW output, then the charging time is significantly reduced compared to lower charging outputs.

The ADAC came to the following test result: A 30 kWh battery needs 10 hours to be fully charged with a 3.7 kW output, 3 hours with an 11 kW output and only 1.5 hours with the 22 kW output.

However, the average costs (including installation and approval) for a 22 kW wall box are higher at approx. 4,500€ than the costs for an 11 kW wall box at approx. 1,500€. Currently, there is no KfW funding for private charging stations. However, by combining a charging station and photovoltaic system, you can use your own electricity and refuel for around 10 cents per kilowatt hour. This means that a journey of 100 kilometres would only cost you around €1.50.
